Our 4 year PhD Programme on the Molecular Basis of Biological Mechanisms is funded by the Wellcome Trust, and taught and administered within the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology .

Understanding complex biological systems in structural, mechanistic and quantitative terms is a key and growing area that will be the forefront of biology for decades to come. How the complex macromolecules of life are assembled/disassembled and how they interact and function are central questions of immense importance. The ability to interrogate and interfere with biological processes using designer molecules, together with the explosion of information from genomics projects and systems biology are also stimulating new and exciting opportunities in this area, with potentials for tailor-made chemical intervention and customized medicines. The philosophy of our Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD program is to expose the most able students to modern biomolecular science in its widest context and to the power of combining different disciplines from day one, so that barriers between traditional subjects are erased and young scientists emerge well equipped to tackle the most challenging questions in biology today.

The programme is now entering its tenth successful year.

Applications for October 2011 entry are now sought. The closing date for applications is 5th January 2011 - follow the "Eligibility and How to Apply" link on the right.
